Case study: To Scomo or not to Scomo

We have previously discussed the purposes of nicknames in politics (see post here) and how they can be used to build rapport between politicians and voters.

But ABC journalist Michael Rowland is taking a stand!

Right: In January 2022, ABC News Breakfast host Michael Rowland tweeted that his program would be a 'Scomo & Albo free zone,' suggesting that 'someone has to maintain standards.'

Many news organisations have been using the 'Scomo' nickname since Scott Morrison has been Prime Minister.

Discuss as a class: How important do you think it is that journalists use politicians' full names when reporting on political issues? Consider the influence of cultural and situational context.

Below: In March 2022, Channel 9 program '60 Minutes' used a graphic with the shortening 'Albo' to refer to Anthony Albanese, the current Leader of the Opposition.

Presumably, Michael Rowland would not be happy!
