Case study: RIP Warnie

In March 2022, legendary Aussie cricketer Shane 'Warnie' Warne passed away suddenly.

Shortly following his death, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced that the Great Southern Stand at the MCG would be renamed in honour of Warne.

However, there was disagreement about which version of his name would be the most appropriate for the stand's official title.

Left: FOX Sports Australia questions what Warnie would have wanted for the stand bearing his name.

Following the typical Aussie nicknaming tradition of using a shortening and/or a diminutive suffix, many felt that the informal 'Warnie' would be a more culturally appropriate title, as opposed to the formal 'S. K. Warne Stand.' The latter follows the MCG's previous formula for naming stands after retired players.

Right: Media personality, politician and journalist Derryn Hinch states that he wants to 'launch a petition to call the stand... the Warnie Stand.'

Discuss as a class: Given the cultural context of Australian nicknaming tradition, but also the status of the MCG as a historical building, which name do you think is more appropriate?
