Case study: Australian English in the media 2022

Below are several examples of Australian English from the media in 2022.


Activity: For each example, discuss the social purpose.


Above: In 2022, AAMI insurance has been running their 'Could've Been a Clanger' campaign during AFL broadcasts.


In Australian English, a 'clanger' is a slang term meaning both a bad kick in footy, or the back of a car, making it a pun in this instance.

Right: In April 2022, Victorian Premier Dan Andrews shared this post on social media. Using his typical informal style of communication, he included Aussie slang term 'sparkie'.


His phrasing also makes use of antithesis, as well as alliteration.


The final sentence features non-Standard syntax, beginning with conjunction 'and'.
