Aboriginal Englishes

These articles discuss the cultural significance and provide examples of Aboriginal Australian English.

Remember to differentiate between:

  • expressions that are used exclusively by Indigenous Australians, and therefore represent their unique cultures and identities

  • expressions that originate from Indigenous languages, and have been borrowed into Standard Australian English

Useful quote from the article:

'There are similarities between Standard Australian English and Aboriginal English, but this can pose serious obstacles for its speakers, who are misinterpreted by some as speaking poor English.'
